CHAPTER 30

Ronan felt the ache that emanated from every muscle in his body.

He sat in Captain Ashby’s office, leaned back against a seat. The captain was in the middle of a lecture about how he and Bonamico could’ve been killed over on Lee Street and he wanted to know exactly what happened from the time they knocked on the door until the time the shooting began. Luckily, Bonamico recounted everything that happened.

Ronan’s gaze roamed around the office, zigzagging and unable to land or find focus. The room seemed overly white and bright, which Ronan knew wasn’t possible. He had come back from Charleston Mercy after having his abdomen and back examined with an MRI machine, which showed no broken bones or torn muscles or tendons. He refused to be tested for a concussion and assured the doctor that he wasn’t experiencing blurred vision or dizziness, but he now wondered if that had been the right decision.

“I checked with the hospital and Daisy Jones is in surgery, but it doesn’t look good,” Ashby said. “The knife our perp used clipped the abdominal aorta and she lost a lot of blood. They don’t know if she’ll make it. I’ve got units canvassing the area, looking for our suspect. So far, they haven’t found anything. Forensics have collected the shell casings from the yard. It will have to be analyzed further, but they look like ones discharged from a semi-automatic weapon.”

“Anybody in the other houses or on the street injured?” Ronan asked, afraid of what the answer might be.

Ashby shook his head. “No. A little property damage to an adjacent home, but that’s it.” He rocked forward a bit and set his jaw. “Neighbors said they saw the car race down the street before the gunfire started, but nobody could make out the license plate or the face of the shooters. We are canvassing the neighborhood to see if anyone had a security camera that was activated and working during the shooting. I’ve got an APB out for a metallic blue four-door car with a boxed frame.”

Ronan looked over at Eric, who had managed to launch himself into a set of bushes facing the street when the shots were fired. That quick decision protected him from the gunfire. After a couple of minutes of pops buzzing in the air and the sounds of glass and wood and being ripped apart in small chunks by a hail of gunfire, the scene at the house became remarkably calm.

When Ronan regained his composure after jumping off the porch with Daisy, she was gasping for breath and moaning audibly. Ronan wanted to put a hand over her mouth in case the shooters decided to approach the house looking for survivors, but he heard the car engine rumble, and the tires scream against the pavement.

He remembered hearing the faint wail of sirens in the distance and Captain Ashby pushing back a thicket of branches, instructing Ronan to let go of Daisy and yelling at a paramedic to help them both.
